A week 53 payroll can occur from time to time for employers who pay wages weekly, fortnightly or 4-weekly. It never occurs for employers who pay monthly.

In 2025, if your normal pay day is Wednesday then you will have a Week 53 if your next pay day falls on Wednesday 31st December.

If however you normally pay you wages on any other day of the week then you will not have a week 53, even if you bring your payment date forward to Wednesday 31st because of the bank holiday on New Years Day.
